Matthew was a member of the Ombudsman`s employee concerns program of a global energy company dedicated to investigating and resolving safety and environmental issues. Matthew has published extensively on the legal impacts of climate change as well as other environmental issues. Matthew has over ten years of experience in the practice of commercial law and is the Managing Director of Morton Legal. After 10 years as a business lawyer working for others, Matthew decided it was time to change and shake up the legal services industry – a new direction in legal advice. Matthew Morton focuses on the environmental aspects of complex commercial transactions, including corporate mergers and acquisitions and financing transactions as well as corporate restructurings. He advises clients on environmental liability and risk allocation, drafting and negotiating environmental contractual clauses, resolving environmental issues in bankruptcy, underwriting environmental insurance and insurance and guarantee, and pursuing post-closing compliance and liability issues. In this role, Matthew is responsible for coordinating environmental due diligence, managing environmental consultants, advising clients on environmental liability and risk allocation, drafting and negotiating environmental contract wording, underwriting environmental insurance, coordinating licence transfers and monitoring compliance and accountability issues after closing. In addition, Matthew advises on the business implications of upcoming legal and regulatory developments and regulatory issues, including approval requirements. Matthew also has experience drafting environmental impact assessments under NEPA and similar state laws and securities disclosure issues, and assists litigation teams involved in the government`s enforcement of environmental issues.
